Abstract This discussion describes flaws in the modeling and analysis of the World Trade Center collapses by Bažant and Verdure in their paper entitled "Mechanics of Progressive Collapse: Learning from World Trade Center and Building Demolitions." First, the paper's two-phased approach to the collapse analysis will be considered. The writers will demonstrate that a two-phase collapse analysis is not representative of reality, because it disregards well-accepted laws of physics and therefore is not instructive. Second, the original paper's summary of the findings of the NIST report will be analyzed.
